Subhas Chandra Bose had been asking for Gandhi's blessings to continue his mission to liberate India from British rule despite being pessimistic of Gandhi's efforts. This gained widespread acceptance due to Gandhi's role in the freedom struggle. Nehru- Prime Minister of independent India addressed Gandhi as 'Bapu' (father) it contributed to Gandhi being known as 'Father of the Nation'. "Mahatma" means Great Soul, Gandhi has been addressed as Mahatma Gandhi ever since he efforts for gaining independence for India.

On January 30th, 1948, Gandhi was leaving to a prayer meeting at Birla House, New Delhi.  On his way, Gandhi was shot by Nathuram Godse. Three bullets were fired at Gandhi chest. Gandhi had been carried to his room, but Mahatma Gandhi’s journey came to an end.

'Father of the Nation' was first conferred upon Gandhi by Subhas Chandra Bose.
